I'm not a big breakfast guy on the trail. It just takes to much time and I just wanna make miles in the morning. But nutrition is important, and you need to refuel in the morning to have the energy to do those miles.
I fell in love with Carnation Instant Breakfast. I liked to add protein powder as well as whole powdered milk (difficult to find whole powdered milk on the trail, usually all they have is non-fat), for flavor I liked to add instant cappucino mix or hot chocolate mix. It tastes great (or at least not bad) and you can drink it while hiking!

i don't usually eat breakfast living in town, and i didn't start off the trail eating breakfast, but eventually i found something i liked. they don't seem to have them in grocery stores very often, but at every gas station mini mart you'll find individually wrapped muffins, pound cake and other pastries. i found that these typically had a huge amount of calories, sometimes like 700 calories for one muffin! ok, maybe they're not the healthiest thing around, but they did the trick for me in the morning, and i never got tired of them.

I'm a breakfast bar guy myself. Lot of the available bars are pretty worthless in terms of calories and nutrition but there are a few that start my motor ...like the Quaker Breakfast Bars (3 - 4 different flavors). Two of those and some Tang and/or a cup of hot coffee and I'm ready to knock out the first miles of the day.

I too usually don't spend much time with breakfast and have 1 or 2 granola type bars or breakfast bars but I usually get tired of them pretty quickly. They also don't seem to last long for energy and I'm usually eating again an hour up the trail.
I'm thinking of going bagels, tortillas and E.muffins this thru hike. As a quick breakfast kinda guy, do you think I'm barking up the wrong tree? Have you tried these and gone back to the breakfast bars?

I like to do bagels with nutella (http://adventureonthepct.com/showthread.php?t=121) for breakfast sometimes.
Or granola cereal. Not as quick n easy as bars but quicker than cooking.

Excellent point !! That is a true statement and applies to almost all trail foods.
Interestingly, the fact that the energy doesn't last very long is more a funtion of what we're doing (hiking) than the food itself. I find that NOTHING I eat, other than a huge warm dinner, tends to last very long. I believe the key is eating OFTEN and not expecting too much out of breakfast or lunch. I have learned to pack ample high calorie, fast burning snacks and eat almost constantly while I'm hiking. I also start out every morning with a 20oz bottle of Gatorade, Tang (or a mixture of the two) and suppliment my water intake.
