Environmentally Friendly Gear

I am curious as to what kind of gear we can choose to use to be more environmentally responsible. I'm guessing most of the impact right now comes during the manufacturing process? What about the materials used to make our gear? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think that, as with most things in life, the "greenest" choice is to buy/consume as little as possible, and re-use/recycle as much as possible.
