Update RE Ursack:

SIBBG has conditionally approved the S29 Hybrid for use in the restricted areas of the Sierra for 2007. "Conditionally approved" means that approval can be withdrawn if there are failures. All models of Ursacks can be used in the non-restricted areas.

Obviously, my suggestion would be to only carry the S29 Hybrid with metal insert if you choose to use an Ursack

Question: In areas where a bear canister is required, are you required to carry all food in it all the time, except when you're actually eating? Or are you just required to store food in it while you're camped out at night? I'm about to hike the JMT and this bear canister thing is new to me...

There is a statement on the Yosemite National Park website saying that the bear can requirements don't apply when you are transporting the food (see the underlined statement in green below).

This is copied from the Yosemite National Park site:

Bear-Resistant Food Canisters

You must store food in a bear canister:

• Within seven linear miles of any park road
• Above 9,600 feet
• Within 1/2 mile of the shoreline of Benson Lake

View a map (http://www.nps.gov/archive/yose/wilderness/bfoodstoragem.htm) showing where canisters are required.

View a list of approved canisters. (http://www.sierrawildbear.gov/foodstorage/approvedcontainers.htm)

This requirement does not apply to food that's being transported or eaten

Thanks. My JMT hike plan is to get a mail drop at Muir Trail Ranch. I'm planning to get a bit more food than will fit in the bear canister, but the food outside is the first day's supply and will be gone before going to sleep that night.

OKay I just ordered mine....but without the liner.
I know, I know....but my two sons will be carrying the regular Garcia bear canisters with the food.

Mine will be the extras....trash....etc...

This was a very tough decision for me...when would I ever use this again? Yet now I do not have to carry the extra 3 lb canister.
