Volunteers

The Mid-Oregon segment of the Pacific Crest Trail needs volunteers. If you live in Oregon this is your chance to get involved in a variety of activities that will ensure the wellbeing and success of the trail:

Wilderness and Trailhead Host Program - Take an active role in promoting and protecting the spectacular National Forest wilderness areas surrounding the PCT. You will interact with visitors, sharing your knowledge and experiences. The NFS provides training and tools and you get to spend time living in and caring for wilderness areas, based on trailheads. A great way to meet and assist fellow riders or hikers.

Non-field administration - Both the Forest Service and the PCTA are looking for coordinators and committee members who can support field operations with their organizing and fund raising skills. If you are a “desk jockey” with an appreciation for the hills, this is the job for you.

Incident Responders - On occasions, landslides and fires close portions of the PCT and surrounding area. Trail users need accurate information on closures and diversions. Become part of a team of responders who are on call to create and manage diversion routes, put up signage and assist in shuttling around problem areas. This vital function allows the Forest Service to concentrate their efforts on dealing with the emergency rather than worry about hiker safety. This is an ideal opportunity for those less physically active to participate in trail activities.

Trail Adopters - “Adopt” a section of the PCT! There are various sections of the Mid-Oregon segment that are orphaned and have no one to provide long term loving care and protection. Hike or ride your section; organize your friends into maintenance parties; meet other adopters and become part of the stimulating process that keeps the trail alive. Training and tools are provided and you always have the support of the PCTA and NFS. Trail Adopters are the lifeblood of the PCT.

Join a Trail Crew - Trail crews work on major rehabilitation and maintenance projects of one to two weeks duration under the direction of the PCTA and Americorp. If you are interested in an extensive trail work adventure, working and living in the backcountry with an experienced crew, this is for you! No experience in trail work needed. You have only to bring your backpacking equipment and we will provide tools, group gear, training, food and supplies, and a great outdoor experience. Major payback time for you ex-through hikers!

Remember: Every hiker has a Mum! (and a Dad, siblings, significant others and friends). Get them all involved.
