I'm looking for advice from people who have used an umbrella for sun protection. Having used one, would you recommend using one on the pct? How did you hold it up? Which brand did you use? And... do you think one might be able to replace a hat? Any other umbrella wisdom or advice?

Check out this journal...SierraShade as well as Tha Wookie and a few others use umbrellas.
also MontBell U. L. Umbrella looks pretty nice.
Windy forget it...hot and sunny with no shade trees around other than a not to wide catus you will sing praises for that 5.8 oz umbrella.
Someone at the Kickoff I think makes or shows you how to make a umbrella attachment for your pack..so both hands are free.
The AT would not be practical but on the PCT it would be a good luxury item.
Luxurylite has one as well...I owned it... but it was not big enough for me. Many people speak highly of Golite umbrellas. I was thinking the old umbrella hat...goofy but would work...:D :p

I own a Golite umbrella but do not have a lot of experience carrying/using it.
I carried one of those "umbrella hats" (mentioned in the previous post) on the AT in 2003. Thinking seriously about carrying on my PCT hike. Does look a bit strange but works quite well actually. Only problem is that the fabric used is pretty thin and cheap. If you could get one with the reflective mylar fabric it would probably be better.

There's been some discussion on BPL about the "Skinny Mini" umbrella at 4.5 oz.

It's amazing how well shade works on the PCT. On the AT, because of the humidity, it just didn't matter. But the PCT, it makes a big deal. When I get back out there to do the northern half of the trail, I'm going to bring un umbrella, at least for the CA section.
