Do you need a mail drop here or is the store good enough?

warner springs... depends on how picky you are, and how late you are in getting there relative to the herd... if you're not picky, and the store hasn't been cleaned out, you can resupply here- they've been stocking various hikers staples for the past couple seasons. also there's a hiker box at the post office. another option is to hitch about 8 miles north on the highway to the grocery store. i resupplied there last year, and it was great. check the yogi guide for more info.

I had no mail drops at all, and was just fine. There's a lot of resupply options.
To be fair though, I only did the first half of the trail. I don't know what the northern section of the trail is like. Regardless, when I go do the second half of the trail, I will not use maildrops there either, and just take it as it comes. Much more relaxing that way.

as far as the trail in general goes, i really only used maildrops in oregon and washington, which i sent to myself from points earlier in the trail. BUT when i got to those places, i found that the supposedly meager resupply options would have been sufficient for me. so if i hike the pct again, i will probably do NO maildrops at all.

Another (better?) option is to resupply in Julian, just hitch hike or take the bus into Julian when you get to the highway prior to hiking into the San Felipe Hills. It's an easy hitch in and out of Julian at the highway crossing.

true, though it is an 11-mile hitch up a winding mountain road... but still very do-able... i was just in julian yesterday (took georgi heitman up there- she's in san diego at the moment and wanted to visit julian). there's a new gear shop in julian, which would make it the first gear shop on the trail, prior to idyllwild. having said that, it's a pretty pathetic selection- it's a TINY place, and half their stock seems to be dumb designer fashion "outdoor wear" type crap, BUT they do have some basics, and if you're desperate for something, they may just be the ticket. pie town gear on the main drag, easy to find.
