I'd like to here from those who have hiked the JMT or PCT about how the altitude affected your hiking.
How long did it take you to acclimatize? What kind of mileage can I expect to make compared to normal? Did you eat/drink differently? Anything else I should know?
Ten years ago when I was 30 I hiked to about 10,000 ft and was very winded at the 'top'. Don't remember where it was... I live near sea level and don't really know what to expect when I go to hike the JMT next year.
Thanks in advance!

Well, every person is going to be different but it probably took me about 3 days before I felt comfortable at the higher altitudes on the JMT. You could take a couple days at Tuolomne (around 9k) to help acclimatize. If you do that, make sure you do a couple day hikes or light to moderate activity during those acclimatization days. Also make sure you stay well hydrated.

Hello RinRin,
Like BScott says, everyone will be different. I don't seem to suffer from affects of moderate altitude, certainly not below 13000ft. But I know an experienced mountaineer who feels the affects at 10K.
I think if you are susceptible, then the deal is to approach gradually and keep hydrated. The following link may be of interest/help...

Like both of the guys above said it's important to know your own body. Most people will tell you to take your time and stay very hydrated. Oddly enough I'm from Florida and had no problem running right up Whitney or any of the passes, guess I got lucky.
It might help to test yourself with altitude before your trip but if that is not possible just take your time and try to do your first major climb with a partner.
I was attempting a thru in 2007 but only got to yosemite. anyway i found that at stretchs of time at altitude (above 10,000') i lost my appetite and got weak from not eating.
