I' be interested in seeing a list of the various shelters/shelter combinations that previous thru-hikers have seen or used on the PCT.
I've got closets full of different tents/tarps/bivies. Starting to make some decisions about which one(s) to carry ...or possibly even look at new ones. Should it be floorless tarp w/bivy, lightweigh sil shelter w/floor, ect ??
So, c'mon folks, tell me what you saw, what worked, what didn't ...and WHY.
Thanks in advance.

In my mind carrying a tent of any kind through prior to the Sierra is a waste. I can't tell you how many times I past people setting up tents under clear, star filled skies in the desert. Why?
Beyond that it's about your own comfort level. I only carried a poncho, and I felt that was adequate. I also had a bug net that sewn like a sock to protect me from the mosquitos. I liked the fact that I could throw it over myself and eat lunch too, very versatile.
As it got later in the year and the it started to rain, I got really wet, but then so did everyone who had a tent (remember, you're going to be hiking some 10+ hours per day in whatever weather is available).
As far as sil tarp tents go or floorless tents, I think if I was going to carry the extra weight, I'd go full bore and carry a regular tent.
Also, if I was going to be hiking with a partner, then a tent makes more sense as you're splitting the weight between two people.

I think Footslogger is hoping someone here could please share an actual list and location of any shelters on the PCT
Which by the way I did not think there were any shelters but a few hostels and Trail Angels who open up their private homes to you.
Okay now you can prove me wrong...:D :p

Actually no ...I am talking about tents. I'm interested in knowing what types of tents have been used. What seems to work best and why.
My shelters:
Tarptent Virga II through southern and northern CA 2006while solo. I liked it. I would use it again.
Switched to a Tarptent Cloudburst when my wife joined me in the Sierra. We also used the Cloudburst in WA July-August 2005, and a late season Sierra hike in 2004. We liked the Cloudburst but have had two zippers fail,
the second shortly after being repaired.
Tarp southbound in OR, August - September 2005. Worked but I wished I had a tent toward the end of the hike for more warmth, my sleeping bag was too light.
If I were starting a through hike this year I would think about a tarp for southern CA if I wasn't starting too early. I would take the Virga II north through the Sierra. In Washington I would plan on adding a bivy cover or go to a double walled tent if it was getting late in the season.
