For me staying connected with friends on the trail was really important. You can spend a fortune in calling cards, but I just found a way to make keeping everyone up to date a whole lot easier and cheaper!

There is this very cool new "FREE" service called "JOTT"
http://jott.com/Jott/login2.aspx

It works like this,

1. Register on the site
2. Create a "group" with all your friends names and numbers.
3. When you're on the trail, call the toll free number, and record a message to all your friends.
4. That message then appears as text (their computer transcribes your voice) as well as an audio message in your friend's voice mail!

You've just updated everyone in your phone book with one toll free call!

You can also record private messages to individual friends.

If your friends have the free service, they can send messages back to you which you can retrieve from the toll free number. Sweet!

You can also send messages back and forth between other hikers! Update hikers on trail conditions ahead and let all your hiking friends know your status and where to meet up.

Very cool

(but I'm a geek like that).
