I was happy to have found this little website after piddling around on the whiteblaze board.
My wife and I set out to hike the CA stretch in 93 after getting fed up with the crowds and life in LA/SD/Sacto that we had lived in. Let me preface this by saying that we were not married at the time and she has volunteered to remain in my presence even after draggin her on that excursion.
We planned the trip together, bought food and gear, trained and headed to the southern border to start. It didn't take long to realize that we travelled at different paces and that our relationship would be better served if the faster of the two would remain at the same pace as the 'less fast'.
We met wonderful people and a great trail angel named Scott who offered up his home and car to a band of us dirtbags. Unfortunately, we didn't make it too far before I started getting some numbness in my left thigh from the hip belt pinching my sciatic nerve (the numbness lasted about 6 months) and my wife developed horrible tendonitis in her knees. By the time we made it to Idlewild where we had some friends, we decided to call it quits before something really damaging occurred.
As I recall it was something around 180 miles and less than two weeks, but that time we spent together cemented our relationship and forced us to rely on each other regardless of pride or embarassment. Spend twenty four hours a day with someone for a few weeks and you will know in a very short time whether you will be with them for life.
By the way, after hopping off the trail, we hitched a ride in a friend's plane back to Sacramento and hopped in my wife's car to drive around the country for the next 2 1/2 months. We had already quit our jobs so what the hell. We'd like to go back and finish someday, but you know how life happens...
