I used a Henry Shires Tarptent on the AT last year and enjoyed it. The only problem is that it requires stakes to be set up. Are there a lot of areas throughout the PCT where stakes won't go in the ground? Should I consider another type of tent?

I used the Double Rainbow TT on the AT this last year. It can be set up with poles to use as a free standing TT too. I never tried the free standing feature, due to the fact I always camped on soft soil. Not sure which one you own so I can not say for-sure, plenty of stake out rocks in the Sierra's.
I really ejoyed the Double Rainbow as my shelter or shared with my friend and his young daughter, roomy.
I've used the Virga II and Cloudburst at various times on the PCT. I've also used a tarp.
When I couldn't use stakes I would tie down to rocks, logs or shrubs.
I had one night when I couldn't get the tent up due to high winds, very loose soil and no rocks or trees. I moved on to a better spot.

I used a 03 model Virga TT on my 06 thru hike. No problems setting it up. When it was windy or the soil was soft, I used rocks on the stakes.
