Did you try to fish while you were hiking the trail? Catch anything? What gear did you bring?
For the High Sierra, I brought some line (monofilament) and some random flies I bought at the Kennedy Meadows store. Tied the line to my trekking pole and started stalking fish. Wasn't the easiest method but was lightweight and i probably caught close to ten small trout this way.

Magnet,
Love fresh fish occassionally. Do you need any specific licences on the trail for fishing?

Well, I suppose you are required to have a state fishing license. If I remember correctly, it's difficult to do the license thing if you are from out of state. I'm not sure but I believe it had to do with "out of staters" needing to choose specific dates on which their license would be valid or something like that. Maybe someone else can verify this. I don't recall very many hikers who engaged in fishing having licenses.

I tried fishing a couple times using fishing line and a hook, strung off my hiking pole, using cheese for bait... I had no luck. The fish just weren't interested. I blame the gear ;)

I'm planning to carry a little fishing kit for most of the trail. In a ziplock I'll have about a 15 foot piece of fly line and a 7 foot 3x leader, with a few hoppers and streamers and maybe a Wulff or two. I can hang that off my ski pole and easily roll cast close to 20 feet, or make a willow stick rod for a little softer feel. I hear there's little brookies and rainbows in the southern mountains, and the kit will only be a few ounces. I think by law you should probably have a liscense, but I bet you could talk your way out of it:) Fun and food, you cna't beat that!
